Youth classes are limited to those ages 10 to 17. I will take up to two youth students per class unless I have another experienced woodturner with me, as that’s all I feel I can safely supervise. Depending on the youths level of interest and degree of experience we cover all aspects of woodturning, with a project selected for each session, with emphasis on safety. I have extra safety gear, tools, and chucks for the youth turners. At this time I do not charge for the youth woodturning classes. These classes can be scheduled by calling me to arrange a mutually convenient time.
If interested I can also teach home schooled youth; however, since these are usually on-going, there is a small fee to be negotiated at the time for this type of instruction.
I am also involved with the American Association of Woodturners youth program. At the annual AAW symposium, vendors donate 25 woodturning stations (lathes, tools, safety gear, chucks) and classes are conducted by experienced woodturners to up to 25 students at a time. Then when the symposium is over, the 25 woodturning stations are given to 25 lucky students whose names are drawn out of a hat. This is a great program and 2010 will be its sixth year. There are usually between 60 and 100 youth enrolled in the program at each symposium. The last two pictures in the gallery below were taken at the 2009 symposium in Albuquerque. For more information on this program go to the American Association of Woodturners web site, using the link on my links page.
